Oliver Wyman's 2018 MRO survey marked a significant jump in the number of participants who selected advancements in Technology as one of the main industry trends. But would just using advanced technology help the industry in getting the benefits it expects?
Technology today would be ineffective without the data foundation that maximises the advantage of using that technology. The first step for MRO organisations is to build a Digital item, part, product, service master data systems of record to be used by the consuming technology. Not only does this master data need to be Digital, but also it needs to be cloud-based to ensure future readiness and compatibility to the very technologies (AI, ML, Blockchain) that it will serve.
While last year’s survey participants were equally preoccupied by the rapid expansion of the global airline fleet, this year OEMs were respondents’ number one disruptor (60%), followed closely by aftermarket industry consolidation (55%) – which in part is a result of heightened competition from OEMs. That category moved up 26 percentage points from last year – the most of any.
